Why did John Mann let Bassetlaw down?

by Leon Duveen on 21 July, 2015

Welfare Bill voteAt the Election Hustings earlier this year, John Mann made a great play as to how he was independent mided and would always put the interests of Bassetlaw first. When I pointed out that if fact his voting record was that of a labour loyalist ( What you are voting for? ), he took exception to that and tried to get me to take the post down.

Last night, however, he gave the lie to all his bluster about being an independent when he along with 183 other Labour MPs refused to vote against the Second Reading of the Welfare Reform and Work Bill (which, as Tim Farron said, is “anything but good for our country’s welfare”), a vote the Tory Government won by 184 votes.

Yet again, despite all his fine words during the election campaign, John Mann has revert to type as a Labour Party loyalist who has put party discipline ahead of constituents or principles.

As his constituents, we are entitled to know why John Mann put the interests of the Labour Party ahead to the welfare of those on benefits in Bassetlaw, why he did not stand up (as others in his party did) for those who will suffer under the changes to welfare the Bill will introduce, why he allowed this Bill to proceed without registering a vote against it. He is always so vocal on what he does do, now he owes us an explanation as to why he failed the people of Bassetlaw

If people believe that we live in a democracy, then it is the duty of all elected MP’s to act in the interests of those that elected them, and not just to to a Party line or be bullied by whips into a Party line.
Where is Democracy? If it ever truly existed at all!

I am inclined to be in agreement with you.
Always having voted labour, I have been disappointed with their performance in opposition over the past several years.
Yes, reform in welfare was needed, however, I certainly think that the government has gone one step too far on this occasion. Labour does appear to be in limbo, and undoubtedly have permitted the Conservatives to abuse their position, something we did not vote for.
